Treasure Island Auditions -

“Not one of us must breathe a word of what we've found…”

 Treasure Island 2022: Auditions!

It's a dark and stormy night. Jim, the inn-keeper's granddaughter, opens the door to a terrifying stranger. At the old sailor's feet sits a huge sea-chest, full of secrets. Jim invites him in - and her dangerous voyage begins. Treasure Island, Robert Louis Stevenson's classic story of murder, money and mutiny.

Ahoy landlubbers! It’s time to set sail on the 2022 Christmas production, which this year is the classic TREASURE ISLAND

They must be able to command a rehearsal room with their peers and have excellent diplomacy and empathy. They must work alongside the Director and have excellent admin skills and invention. They support the Director in all aspects of the work.

DEPUTY STAGE MANAGER (DSM) The DSM must like observing; have an instinct for organisation and be very efficient. The DSM keeps the rehearsal book and writes down all the lighting and sound cues so they can control the technical rehearsal. They will have all the moves for each actor written down. They must work very well under pressure and be meticulously good at communication, and logical organisation. They will keep all lists for every aspect of the production. There will be THREE or FOUR rehearsal DSMS from the same year. The team of DSMS can rotate rehearsals but must all be available after half term. One DSM will call the show and the other DSMs will turn into Stage Management – with responsibilities for all the backstage organisation on the show. This is a key role

WHAT ACTING ROLES CAN I APPLY FOR?

Treasure Island has a great list of characters, which are detailed below..

Jim Hawkins

Jim has been living and working in her grandma’s pub for as long as she can remember. Naturally resourceful, intelligent and adventurous, she yearns for a more exciting life. Treasure Island is that more exciting life, it’s Jim’s coming-of-age story and how her life will be defined.

Grandma Hawkins

Grandma Hawkins is the doughty landlady of the Admiral Benbow Inn, and she has to be, with her dodgy clients. Her relationship with Jim is the springboard for the adventure, and provides the ‘heart’ in the story that motivates her grand-daughter.

Fascinating fact: She's surprisingly strong, capable of dealing with a drunken sailor.

Doctor Livesey

Magistrate and doctor, used to having his/her own way

Fascinating fact: Will probably cast opposite gender to the squire

Squire Trelawney

Headstrong and posh, the Squire is tempted by the money and an overwhelming sense of superiority.

Fascinating fact: Probably likes to slap his/her own thighs and talk too loud.

Mrs Crossley

Pub regular, a pious gossip and Grandma's BFF. A small part, but key to establishing the soul of the village

Fascinating fact: "A little gin dear. A little more. Keep going. Up to the top. Cheers"

Red Ruth

A salty sea dog, loyal to the bloody end

Fascinating fact: Silent Sue's voice and interpreter

Job Anderson

Sailor, who stands up to John Silver and dies honourably and gruesomely.

Lucky Micky

A treacherous villager and sailor, driven by self-interest and the easiest way

Fascinating fact: "Luck" is a very varied concept. For Micky, it's finding a groat in a cowpat.

Silent Sue

Never to be found too far from Red Ruth, her apparent timidity finds voice in her expressive and over the top gestures. Lots of comic and tragic potential.

Fascinating fact: Utters only two sounds, so needs to be physically expressive.

Shanty Singer

Appears three times as singer, to lead the singing. Depending on set changes, we may increase this to 4 or 5 and introduce a couple of songs that aren't in the script

Fascinating fact: The singer could be doubled up with one of the other pirates

Bill Bones

Haunted by his past, Bill Bones has to keep moving to stay alive. But he knows his time will come...

Fascinating fact: Dies of fear when Pew hands him the Black Spot

Black Dog

Scuttling and scary, black through to the very heart. There is no redeeming a pirate like Black Dog.

Blind Pew

A terrifying villain, half-dementor, half-Quasimodo.

Fascinating fact: Could be doubled with another pirate

Captain Smollett

An honourable sailor, whose untimely death threatens our heroes' very existence.

John Silver

Loveable rogue or bloodthirsty villain? John (or Jean) Silver has to manage to be both things, and command attention as the ship's cook, and the pirate ringleader.

Fascinating fact: The script includes a cunning device to avoid the need for casting one leg, or 'strapping up'.

Joan the Goat

A fighter, a brawler, a lover. Not a lover. Just a fighter and a brawler. And a pirate.

Fascinating fact: Needs a strong, brawny physical performance.

Israel Hands (ideally speaks a non-English language)

An enigmatic character who you might assume to be bad to the bone... but who has some surprises up their sleeve

Fascinating fact: The script for Hands is in Portuguese, but we're happy to translate into another language, or possibly into the thickish and most impenetrable Cornish accent you've ever heard. Even if everyone thinks it's Portuguese, it might actually be 'pirate'

Dick the Dandy

Pirate, used to the better things in life.

Fascinating fact: Handsome, pouting, the audience will love Dick the Dandy. Almost as much as he loves himself.

Killigrew the Kind

A large hand and gentle natured murderer, who finally gets a moment of redemption.

Fascinating fact: Although the script refers to physical size, we're more interested in physical performance. Someone less big, but muscly would be fine.

George Badger

A pirate, who likes to grumble and stir up trouble. Notices things a bit quicker than others.

Grey

A hapless and forgettable sailor, of somewhat mystic nature.

Fascinating fact: Grey, surprisingly, saves the day. Even if no-one notices (except the audience)

Captain Flint (puppeteer)

The parrot, Captain Flint, has lines and will engage with the audience as it flies around. A great opportunity for interaction and physical comedy.

Fascinating fact: Could double up acting as either grandma or Mrs Crossley

Ben Gunn

Abandoned cabin boy, who has gone wild on the island, Ben Gunn lives in fear of the pirates and needs to summon up all his courage to confront them.

Fascinating fact: Ben has become wild: living on crabs and coconuts and probably swinging through the trees. Find your inner ape!

Ensemble: pirates, locals, shipmates and, at times, furniture

General notes

A word on accents: pirates will have come from around the world and around the country (and world!), so we won't assume they all speak "like pirates".

The parts range considerably in scale. We understand that many people will have an idea of the commitment they want to make, in terms of rehearsal time. So if you'd like to be considered for a small part (with less rehearsal time), please let us know.

WHAT DO I NEED TO PREPARE?

Actors – you need to prepare a speech from the list below, and submit a film of you doing the speech on the Teams Assignment.

You need to LEARN THE LINES for one character, and be prepared that we may ask you to do it in a different way at the recall audition.

Tech Team – you need to fill out an application form, explaining why you think you would be suited to your chosen role.

That’s it! Any questions, just ask. We can’t wait to get started 😊
